Would you like to learn to hand knit, to crochet or to machine knit? I offer one to one sessions at my studio in North London, or I can travel within the London area to come to you. See below for more details and rates. Note that the higher rate for me to come to you assumes travelling across. London: should we realise that you live very close to me I’ll be happy to adjust that when you book!

My studio is upstairs at 16 Avenue Mews, Muswell Hill, in North London. I’m above a sweet vintage shop called Can’t Buy Me Love. If you don’t know Avenue Mews, it’s well worth a visitor a weekend anyway: there are some lovely vintage and gift shops, and you can enjoy a great coffee and cake in one of Muswell Hill’s indie cafes (my favourite is the French-run La Dinette, with cakes to die first, and they allow dogs in! So I am a regular with Edna).

I can also teach small groups, at a venue you choose or I can arrange this for you. I have taught for many years in a college setting, from beginners right up to degree level: whatever your starting point I can help you improve and increase your skills and confidence. I love encouraging my students to create and stretch themselves.

One to one sessions

Machine knitting:

Come and learn to machine knit on my flat bed machines, in my light and airy studio. There are lots of yarns to experiment with, and a wealth of books and magazines to spark your imagination. Or, perhaps you have a machine at home that you are unsure where to start with. Either bring it to me, and we will work on it at my studio, or I can come to you. Do bear in mind that machines that have been packed away for a number of years will probably need servicing and some parts renewing. I can suggest where to get this done.

If you are a beginner, it is suggested that you go for a two hour session to start with, as it takes a while to get used to the feel of the machine. If you have something in particular that you want to learn, let me know in advance and we can focus on that.

Beginner sessions include setting up the machine and getting to know the various parts; tension, yarns and fibres, settings, casting on, basic plain knitting, changing colour, and, depending on your pace, introductory patterning using the machine’s functions, and casting off.

Further skills include tuck, slip, fair isle, intarsia, shaping, knit weave, held stitches and short rowing, lace, hand manipulation of stitches and garment construction. I can also offer sessions in how to go about designing your own garments.

Session prices:

One hour at my studio: £30

Two hours at my studio: £50

One hour at your home: £40

Two hours at your home: £60

Handknitting has been enjoying such a revival over the last decade, it’s everywhere and the wealth of beautiful yarns and patterns available makes creating your own garments an absolute pleasure. If you’ve missed the knitting boat, and are an absolute beginner, never fear: I can get you knitting in no time! Or, if you are a little rusty, or have specific skills that you want to learn or brush up, by booking a one to one session you know you can focus on exactly what you need, without having to wait for the tutor to finish talking to other people.

Beginners will learn to cast on, work the knit and the purl stitch, and cast off. If there’s time, we can look at changing colour to make stripes, and a few other tips and tricks. We will also unpicke mysteries of terminology and look at why tension matters.

Those with some existing skills might want to look at intarsia, Fair Isle, lace, cables, bobbles, shaping, garment creation, using charts, working in the round, using double-pointed needles, and even starting to design your own garments. (Not all of these in the one session, though!)

Whatever your needs get in touch and we can tailor a session (or sessions) to your exact wishes. Basic materials are included for beginners. Once again, I’d recommend allowing a 2-hour session if you are a total beginner.

One hour at my studio: £25

Two hours at my studio: £45

One hour at your home: £35

Two hours at your home: £55

Like handknitting, crochet has seen a massive surge in popularity and is currently all over the catwalks. It’s quicker to work than handknitting and offers the opportunity to make things in 3-D as well as flat. Many people can either crochet OR knit, so if you want to complete your skills then a one to one session can really get you going. Again, I can happily work with beginners or those wanting to brush up or learn specific skills.

Beginners will learn to work a starting chain, make the double and treble crochet stitch, join with a slip stitch, fasten off, change colours, and understand the different between working in the round (as in granny squares) or back and forth in rows (as in ripple stitch etc).

More advanced students might wish to focus on skills such as bobbles, popcorns, puff stitch, bullion stitch, clusters, spike stitch, post stitches, or manipulating stitches to produce 3-D shapes, amongst other things.

Rates are as those given above for handknitting. Basic materials are included for beginners, and again, allow a 2-hour session if you are a complete beginner, if you can.
